Functional Skills

Functional Skills are a set of qualifications that are offered at schools, colleges, training providers and at workplaces in England.

There are three Functional Skills; English, Maths and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Functional Skills are not just about knowledge in these subjects, but they are also about knowing when and how to use the knowledge in real life situations.

English

There are three parts to Functional English and you will be assessed separately on each part:

Reading
This includes reading information such as letters, timetables, newspapers, leaflets, recipes etc.

Writing
You will work on your writing skills so that you can write letters, CVs and reports that you may need at work or in everyday life.

Speaking and Listening

This could include working on your communication skills over the phone, in a job interview or at work.

Maths

This will cover using number in everyday life, such as working out your household bills, budgeting for a holiday or working out which is the best deal on a mobile phone contract. The assessment will include questions on topics like these

Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

ICT includes using email and the internet which you will use in everyday life. It may also cover using applications like word and excel which you might use at work.

The qualifications can be taken at Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 and will form part of your learning programme whilst at ITS. They are included in Foundation Learning and in Apprenticeships.

These qualifications can also be taken as stand-along courses. Please contact Lucy Anderson, Team Leader – Learning Support for more information including costs.

Dyslexia Support

The Learning Support Team provide additional support to learners on all of our programmes. We have recently established a working relationship with the White Rose Dyslexia Centre in Sheffield, who carry out assessments for dyslexia for any of our learners who may need this. The Learning Support Team can then provide specific support for any learners who require this.
